A matter of form

ABOUT
The power of type is often underestimated. Type is not only a tool for communication, it’s a language of its own, with room for emotions, humor, irony or simply rationality. The Master’s thesis called »A matter of form: An essay on type design« examines the form of our letters, which define the purpose, functionality and impact of a typeface and significantly influence their readers and beholders. The interrelation of tradition and innovation, as well as the controversial issue of neutrality and expression constitute an essential part in this discussion. The thesis concludes in an experiment with Helvetica and Times New Roman, demonstrating how their impact and character change upon variation of their form (see Neutrality:Expression).
